As the rodent clings to his partner’s shoulder, a light wind picks up ruffling his short fur and Kai’s hair. He shifts his position a little so his hind feet had proper footing against the males back. His ears pulled back slightly at his partner’s words, he hated being reminded of his failure. The mere mention of their loss at the league, his overconfidence causing them to lose the match, caused Thor to wince. It was like reopening an old wound.
“Chaa…” They were well-rested now, and he’s had a lot of time to reflect and grieve and get the anger out of his system. Like Kai said, it was a minor setback, just another hill they had to climb in order to further their goals, and nothing was gonna stop them either. No matter how many times they might fall, they’d simply get back up, cause failure wasn’t an option. He made a promise to himself, and a promise to his partner that they would show the world what they were made of.
His right paw squeezes the male’s shoulder as he nods his head at the question, while his left held up a good portion of his upper body so he could lean forward on Kai’s shoulder. His head popping out in the light-haired boy’s vision. Sparks briefly danced along his cheeks and the electric mouse gives a sharp grin full of teeth. His resolve strengthening with the speech.
“Raichu!” Of course, he was with you Kai. He wouldn’t wanna be anywhere else.
The weight of the rodent never bothered Kai. At most, he felt like a sack that was attempting to distribute his weight as a means to not be DISPROPORTIONATE to his shoulders. Gotta admit, in ways he was thankful for that cause if that wasn’t the case, there was no way in HELL Thor was sticking on his shoulder for long periods of time; he’d walk at his side like any other bipedal or quadrupedal would. In fact, the allowance of this behavior was relatively new. Kai was against interacting with the pokemon in ANY nature that had nothing to do with training & knew that many saw his methods as cold. Pokemon were more than just creatures you use for battle—they were also ‘friends’. God he hated that argument.
It also didn’t help the fact that his own team, the array of different elemental creatures seemed to know that he was keeping distance on purpose & lead by their fearless chubby orange leader, the entire team attempted to get on the better side of their trainer. Had to admit, given how he was, it was amazing that they didn’t hate him. Sure, he wasn’t the WARMEST person in the world but Kai made it his duty to make sure they had everything; they were never on the street, always were kept on top, physical condition, fed & pampered (not really by him but still). Gratitude for their contribution to the team was rewarded. He was not much for words of encouragement & the expression of friendship & love was foreign to Kai. But, action was his strong suit & showing that he cared via action was something he could do.
& he did. Hence where they were today. The sparks of electricity did not phase him nor did he fear them. He learned the hard way to keep himself calm & grounded in order to sustain less damage than what he would’ve gotten had he panicked over the smallest spark. If anything the enthusiasm caused a smirk to etch itself along line-like lips. “Should’ve known better than to ask that question. All else fails at least you’ll still be here with me.” & oddly enough, that was more of a comfort to Kai than anything else.
Enough sentiment. “Alright, here’s the plan.” He began, knowing Thor would be able to understand & delegate to the others once training started. “We’re gonna make it to the next city. We’re not touching the gym until we’ve built ourselves up enough to where we KNOW we can smack around anyone & everyone in that gym. We are not losing anymore unless we severely underestimate our opponents. The margain for error is going to be very small; we’re gonna have to be COMPLETELY off our game if we’re losing left & right & that’s not happening. We’re gonna set up to train & all of us, myself included.” & to cement the ending of that statement, his hand came up & his thumb turned inward to face his chest. “We’re a unit. We win & lose together.”
@thunderstonereject said: Ah, it looks like Kai was ready to go! With a swish of his tail and a flick of his ears the orange mouse tenses the muscles in his hind legs then takes a powerful leap towards his trainer from behind to perch himself on his shoulder. “Raicha!” He squeaks before adjusting his weight properly to make himself and Kai comfortable.
No setback was going to keep them down. Battles were meant to be won & sometimes, you lost a few. Such are the costs of this but like hell if this was going to be enough to put them both down. Thor will never know (unless he could feel it) but Kai needed him more than he did any other pokemon. Don’t get him wrong, he RESPECTED each & every teammate on his belt for their hard work & dedication. That being said, when the chips are DOWN —Thor was the one he knew would pull through. A pokemon he could depend on. A friend who couldn’t speak but still managed to articulate his feelings & expressions of joy, worry & friendship in his own way. When the hell did he get so sentimental?
No matter—-the weight shifted onto his shoulder but did not knock Kai off his balance. They took a tumble; got smacked around but it wasn’t a deterrent. Never was something like that a deterrent. Besides, it’ll only be a matter of time before THEY are the ones giving that hard lesson to some other up & coming trainer. A loss is not a loss. Its a lesson. Its a bet. Its a taunt & by god if he wasn’t ready to take the bait & show them what they could do.
They’ll go down in H I S T O R Y
❛ Minor setback Thor but its alright. They’re just delaying their defeat is all. Hope you & the team had your fill of that break. ❜ He pushed his hand to the side hard, flipping his scarf with a force to make it catch in the wind. ❛ Cause this time, we’re not stopping until we get to the top. No more slacking. No more excuses. Its now or nothing. You with me? ❜
One picture flipped over to the rodent; the figure had BLACK HAIR, AMBER EYES & TOO CLOSELY RESEMBLED A CAT. ❛ That’s Rei. We don’t shock him unless he looks as though he’s going to bite. ❜ Another photo was turned; BLONDE HAIR, CELESTE HUES & THE EPITOME OF A SUGAR HIGH. ❛ Max–he’ll probably find every excuse to pet you. He means no harm. ❜ Final picture; BLUE HAIR, TANNISH SKIN, RED & BLUE CAP. ❛ That’s Takao. He’s not too bad when he’s kept in his box. He touches me, you attack. No excuses. ❜ C'mon now Kai—that’s just rude….but funny. @thunderstonereject
All it takes is one wrong move and everything they worked so hard for would be over.
Thor moved wrong, and it was all over.
Now here he sat, hours later on the floor of their hotel room staring blankly at the ground. His wounds from the earlier match were gone thanks to the efforts of Nurse Joy and Chansey, nothing more than phantom pains of what had been the worst battle of his life. Their opponent was some scrawny kid from some random small town, and his team didn’t look like anything to write home about. It would be an easy win he thought.
They were stronger than this kid, no way they’d lose! Now that he’s sitting on the floor doing a bit of self reflecting, the electric rodent comes to a sudden realization that fills him to the brim with shame. He had broken the very first rule Kai had ever ingrained into him.
‘Never underestimate your opponent. Don’t get cocky just because you think you have the upper hand.’
Thor had gotten cocky and it cost them the match. One of the biggest matches in their career, a fight that they’d been training for so long for, and he flubbed it, all while being tossed around the field like a sack of potatoes. It was humiliating. The sound of door locks clicking into place causes the rodents ears to perk and his head quickly turns towards the door. Kai stood in the middle of the threshold, they meet gazes for a brief moment, only for Thor to quickly glance away and lower his head, his eyes were beginning to water. He couldn’t look him in the eye, not after what he did.
He’d let Kai down, he should’ve been quick enough, should’ve been stronger. If only he wasn’t such an idiot then maybe–
“I’ll hold you as long as you need.”
Breath hitching in his throat, Thor freezes upon seeing Kai swiftly cross the room and drop to his knees so he could wrap his arms around him. Kai’s embrace, coupled with the soft whisper of words against his ears brings the rodent to tears. The water that swelled in his eyes spilling over as he cried against the slate-haired trainer’s shoulder.
[“I-I’m sorry! If… If it wasn’t for me, we could’ve–”]
He couldn’t even get the rest of his words out, choking on them as he violently sobbed, frame shaking in the other’s hold. Eventually his cries settled down and Thor returns the firm embrace, face buried deeply into Kai’s shoulder.
[“I’m sorry Kai, I’ll do better next time.”]
He makes a promise to himself, that from this moment on he would get stronger so they wouldn’t suffer another loss like this one ever again.
A reluctant whine escapes the rodent as turns his head back slightly to look up at his partner, who ushers him to hurry up and pick one of the tasty looking puffs from the beautiful assortment on display so they could get moving. There were so many flavors! How could he pick just one? Raichu’s nose twitches as he drags his paw across the glass, eyes finally focusing on 3 flavors. The dark brown one, which he believes had a bit of a spicy flavor, the pink one, which was really sweet, and finally green, which had somewhat of a dry minty flavor.
After mulling over his options, the large rodent lifts his paw and points at the dark brown one that had white frosting on top with a stick of chocolate pocky and yellow star decoration on the side. He tugs at his trainer’s pants leg with one paw, and points to his snack of choice with the other with a smile, bouncing a little.
“[Oh, oh! Ok, I want that one!]”
Yea yea yea, be nice to your partner. He could already such things being told to Kai & the way he addressed his pokemon. You’d think people would learn how to mind their damn business & let him be. Thor knew to take the things Kai said with a grain of salt—a very fine grain of salt. If they don’t know the conversation, they then don’t have an opinion with him—that’s his thought process. Pretty sure the rat would’ve shocked him by now (or attempted) had he felt as though he was being mistreated. & yet, look at who is being treated to a puff by their trainer. Yea, that’s right, keep fucking walking.
Once the decision was made, Kai unfolded his arms & used one finger to point out the treat to the person behind the desk. ❛ Don’t bother to package it. He’s gonna stuff it in his gullet. ❜ The tone of voice could use some work (again, who the fuck asked) but the treat was handed over; two fingers took it with ease. Down the hand came to hold it right in front of Thor.
Kai Hiwatari was not an overly affectionate person. Not to say that he was averse to giving or receiving affection, he just simply didn’t go around throwing out hugs and kisses to every person he knew or met was all. Kai’s affection was subtle, quiet, and in some instances powerful, much like the male himself. During his time spent with blader the electric mouse has come to realize this, to a lot of people Kai comes off as aloof, mysterious, maybe even a jerk, but he’s actually a really nice guy once you got to know him!
Raichu’s face rested on the top of his paws as he watched the other perfect some new technique with Dranzer from the sidelines. The blue spinning top zipped and zagged through the area, dodging the rocks and trees in its way while its master stood tall, gaze calculating and thoughtful. The creature closes his eyes, relaxing to the now familiar whirring sounds of Dranzer’s blade against the environment. Before the rodent even realized it, he drifted off into a nap.
Raichu soon awakens with a loud yawn, stout frame uncurling from his relaxed position as the creature stretches his limbs and shakes his body, ruffling the short orange fur. He stands on all fours glancing around for his companion, and spots him a few feet away lying on his back gaze turned skyward. Padding over quietly, the mouse nudges his nose against Kai’s hand, smiling when the slate-haired male responds by brushing the bridge of his snout lightly with his fingertips, then moving his hand to scratch lightly beneath his chin.
A coo escapes the battle monster, long tail thumping behind him at the scratching. His ears flick when Kai then proceeds to sit up, causing Raichu to rest back on his haunches, the mouse tilts his head as he eyes the male who’d grown quiet for a moment then finally spoke up.
come here you little rodent–you’re about overdue for a hug.
Eyes momentarily growing wide, Raichu breaks out into a wide smile and proceeds to launch himself at the blader arms extended. “Raicha!” He exclaims, wrapping his short arms around as much of the boy as he could and nuzzling his face against the male’s shoulder. “Chuuuu~”
He’s not sure what spurred this on, Kai didn’t just hand out hugs everyday ya know, but he’d take all the affection he could get!
No, he wasn’t affectionate. No, he didn’t hand out hugs or anything of the sort during any time of day. No, he didn’t find anything nor anyone worthy of his time & yet, here was this little guy, who had no reason to stick around (Kai gave him any & every out he could) & still, for some reason, he suck with the blader. Kai didn’t have a lot of friends for what he believed to be good reasons. People can’t hurt you if you don’t allow them to get close to you.
Can one truly be alone forever? They’re many people who say you can’t; being human meant you crave contact & strive to have it. Anytime that’s happened (until recently) from formative years & upwards, it’s been nothing but reprimands: Either be the best or be nothing at all. Any semblance of affection was only given to the winner. To the loser—who are you, again? You’d think he’d be over it by now; having very few reasons to be in contact with his grandfather & finding no reason to even be in his presence. Why strive to be the best when the person you were trying to impress wants nothing to do with you & vice versa?
Why strive to be the best?
Well–that was fast. You’d thin he just told a joke or something but, the large rodent wasted no time hopping into his arms & holding onto the blader for dear life. The joy that resonated in his voice is what really got to Kai. Something was joyful because of him—an odd concept to understand but, that was the thing with animals. Somehow, some way, they always found a way to trust humans. They can’t lie. They can’t betray. You get from them what you give & apparently, Kai was doing right by this little one. He was doing something right.
His grip tightened some into the ball of fur; the tail swaying some in happiness & the ears falling flat against his head. It might’ve been faint & fleeting but, somewhere in there, was the capacity to care about something else other than himself. When Kai finally did let up, picking the other up, he placed him right on his favorite perch—the shoulder. With the blader’s build, he could support the weight of the Raichu & was able to navigate himself to stand.
❛ I think we’ve lingered long enough, don’t you agree? This place isn’t going to conquer itself & I think it’s about time we come out of retirement. What do we have to lose. Let’s gather a team & take this place by storm, what do you say? ❜
And he wanted to get help from him? Of all people, him? That deplorable man who made his friend’s childhood a living hell? One would think the slate haired male had just slapped the mouse due to the complete and utter disbelieving expression he had resting on his face. As the pair briskly walked through the long narrow hallway, that felt as cold and as unwelcoming as the man they were going to meet, the shorter of the two was trying to talk some sense into his trainer, but it appeared the other had already made up his mind.
“As much as I’d hate to admit it, we’d be powerless on our own against them.”
Raichu could agree with him in that regard, sure they were a strong team, led by a strong trainer. However, those men, that person, that team. They were a bit out of their league, and this wasn’t an issue that could easily be solved alone. They would definitely need help if they were gonna try and do something against the criminal organization.
He just wished they didn’t have to be here of all places.
Biovolt Corporation.
Even the name made his fur bristle.
[”But Kai–!”] He begins to protest, but they had already made it to the office door and Kai was already walking inside. He stalls at the threshold, gritting his teeth as the scent of that man wafted through his nostrils, his cheeks itched and the electric mouse had the strong urge to fire off a few bolts. Kai calls for him to come in and in a very rare moment of defiance, Raichu stands by the door.
Kai calls for him again, and the rodent is very reluctant to move that is, until he opens his mouth and makes a comment about how Kai’s discipline skills were lacking. Raichu’s fur bristled and his head lifts while his eyes lock onto the older male settled behind the desk. He could see just the faintest smirk tilting up his lips that were partly obscured by the hands steepled in front of him.
Raichu wanted to punch him in the face.
Fighting back the strong urge to growl, he quietly enters the room and makes a beeline for his partner, practically gluing himself to Kai’s leg as he stood on his hind legs and pressed against him. Short arms fold stiffly across his front and a serious expression is etched on his face as he waits for the discussion to begin.
Just because they had to ask Grandpa Voltaire for help, doesn’t mean he had to like it.
